No-Sew Chair Cover and DIY Valentines

when pinterest fails are a Win

It all started when my son – my oldest and least crafty of the crew – announced he wanted to DIY his valentines this year. This boy not only NEVER requests to craft, but he  also wanted to re-use the Minecraft valentines I’d created for him last year. This, even after I offered to buy the store bought kind. Be still my crafty heart! This called for a celebration!

I decided that over the weekend I’d surprise all the kiddos with a sweet valentine breakfast and then have a crafting workshop. Okay, I have a way of getting a little carried away…but food is my son’s love language and I wanted to have a little fun with this rare opportunity.No-Sew Chair Cover and DIY Valentines | Five Marigolds

  1. Go Glam – This is my new favorite way to gift wine. Using a scrap of craft fur and an old brooch, I created a little shrug for my “chilled” bottle of wine. Free Printable Letter Writing Templates for Grandma, Pen Pal

We live a little too far from the kids’ grandparents for our taste, and now that both Dub and Eve are writing I want them to be better at communicating with them via snail mail (while practicing their manners and skills).

I’ve searched high and low for letter writing templates and have struggled to find a template with prompts that are appropriate for casual letter writing. Many are specific to summer break (we love this one, especially for non-writers), summer camps and travel. So, I created these letter templates that I’m really happy with:

Letter to Grandma Printable Templates | Five Marigolds

These templates include writing prompts that cover the things we talk about at home at the end of each day: what they’re learning at school, their feelings at the moment, and the best and worst part of their days. I also added a “weather today” section, just for fun, and an area for them to just draw, which is their favorite part.

Do you have friends and family members who live far away? Are your kids starting to interact with pen pals, or heading off to summer camp? This template is for you! I’m sharing them here for my subscribers. Enjoy!

Free Girl’s Room Nursery Artwork Printable

I’ve always loved this book by Bernadette Rossetti-Shustak, and all of my kids have, too.

I love you Through and Through Free Printable Artwork | Five Marigolds

It’s hard to believe this little ‘ol blog is more than two years old now. I created it shortly after my third baby was born as a creative outlet for my craftiness. Today, my baby is a toddler and will be transitioning into her “big girl” room soon!

Recently, I converted the design I created for Baby ‘Belle’s baby announcement to create this printable artwork for her current nursery / soon-to-be big girl room.

When I see this hanging in her room, it reminds me of the baby she was, and of course these sweet words I want her to remember always.

In celebration of the two year anniversary of my blog, I’m making this art available by free download to my readers! Take One And Run Halloween Printable

Every year for Halloween I’m faced with the dilemma of leaving the house to trick-or-treat with the kids and being unable to hand out candy to our fellow trick-or-treaters. I can’t be the only one with this issue right?

I always leave a bowl of goodies on the front step and hope for the best and write a quick and crude “Happy Halloween!” sign to avoid getting egged greet the kids. But wouldn’t it be nice to set something out that is cheerful (ahem, and instructional?). I whipped up this quick printable for this weekend, and I’m sharing it for you here.

New Quaker Chewy Thin Mint Bars and Free Printable Wrapper

We’re gearing up for Back to School around here, which is why I was thrilled when BzzAgent recently sent me two free boxes of their new Chewy Girl Scouts Thin Mint granola bars. Talk about a beautiful marriage of foods! Each year we buy Thin Mints in bulk and hoard them until the next cookie selling season, so I’m thrilled to start seeing Thin Mint flavored goodies popping up in the grocery store year-round.

Back To School Granola Bar Wraps Free Printable | Five Marigolds

BzzAgent is an organization that works with brands and provides its ambassadors with samples and coupons in exchange for trying products, sharing their honest opinion, and spreading the word. In this case, the task is easy, because these granola bars are super yummy and kid-approved.  When Dub took his first bite he proclaimed it “Ahh–mazing” and asked if he could have it as his lunchbox treat at school. No problem!

I love to slip little notes and jokes into his lunchbox daily to let him know I’m thinking of him, so I made a few super simple granola bar wraps to add a special touch to his treat. Of course, I couldn’t leave Evelyn out so I made a couple of girly-girl wraps as well.

Minecraft Steve Lego Birthday Party Favor

This year, Dub wanted his birthday to be all about Minecraft. He’s also really into Legos, so a Lego Steve seemed like an appropriate favor for the goodie bags.

I did a lot of research trying to find an easy way to to this. To be honest, I was hoping there would be a sale of Minecraft Lego lots on ebay that would allow me to phone this one in, but it was not to be.

So, I ended up making Steve myself using the Lego Pick-A-Brick feature.

Minecraft Steve Lego Favor | Five Marigolds

While you can do this in-store if you have a Lego retail location near you, they have a varying selection, so I saved myself the trip and did my shopping online. This is where I insert my Lego PSA – I found out after I placed my order that Pick-A-Brick orders can take up to 18 business days! That’s almost a month! So, this favor only really works if you are planning out by at least a month to ensure your Bricks get to you in time.

Here’s what I ordered to make 15 favors:

Item#, color  – quantity

  • 300423, blue – x30
  • 4113915, yellow – x15
  • 4155708, yellow – x15
  • 4163696, light blue – x15
  • 4179833, light blue – x15
  • 4211210, brown – x15
  • 4243821, green – x15
  • 4271949, brown – x15
  • 4579260, yellow – x15

For the pick axe, I had to go to ebay where I got a great deal paying $1.47 total for 15 axes. That brought the total to $26.21 for 15 favors, or $1.74, each. (I didn’t see any swords or pick axes in the Pick-A-Brick section when I was ordering. They do have a “mini Fireman’s axe” or a “warrior weapon,” though.)

Then, I went to work making  a face for Steve in PhotoShop. I measured it to the size of the 2×2 Lego and then I printed it on Avery label paper. Removing the paper backing first,  I cut down each face sticker to the exact size and then replaced it on a small square of the paper backing to place in the favor bag.

I took a photo of the complete Steve to include with all the kits.

I placed the Legos in a small jewelry ziplock bag. Then, I made a simple tag that I stapled to the top of the sealed bag as a finishing touch.

This was a huge hit among the 6 and 7 year old crowd!

Be Minecraft Valentine’s Day Printable

Is your little one obsessed with Minecraft? I feel you. Dub has the game, the app and the collection of hardcover books that he studies relentlessly. It’s Minecraft hysteria up in here.

Be Minecraft Free Printable Valentine | Five Marigolds

I knew I had to make his Valentine Minecraft-themed. I just wasn’t finding the right thing, so I had to create it myself. I was most inspired by this adorable candy wrap by Simple as That, but really didn’t want to buy a full box of Mike & Ike candy for each of his classmates *cough*cheap*cough* and I was too lazy to cut out those adorable tags of hers. I know, this says a lot about me.

So I went to work creating a wrap for a standard box of conversation hearts. Once it’s printed, I helped cut out the wraps, and then I put Dub to work wrapping the box, using stick glue to seal it on the side, and he signs the back. Done (I love when a good plan comes together).

Princess Party Favors: Candy Necklace Cards

For Eve’s Princess Birthday Party, I was going for a generic princess feel rather than a Disney princess kind of feel. As part of that, I wanted to create some custom party favors. I didn’t really find anything out there I loved for purchase, so I went about creating my own.

You already saw the Candy Button Crown favors I made for the party. Today, I’m sharing the hit of the party – Candy Necklace Cards. I’d seen a super cute concept online, but nothing princess themed. So, I went about creating these myself in PhotoShop, using hair and dress colors that somewhat inspired by Disney princesses, but with look that still felt sweet and unbranded.

Star Wars Birthday Party, Part II Party Favors

Growing up, we didn’t really “do” favor bags. I suppose that’s why I’m really into them when planning parties for my kids. Presents for everyone, just for attending?! I wish grown-up parties would adopt this practice!

I wanted to do something fun for these Star Wars birthday favors, with at least a few items that would get used beyond the ride home from the party. But, of course, I didn’t want to spend a lot of money.

I created these goodie bags for around $3 each, total.Free Printable Star Wars Birthday Party Storm Trooper Favor Bags | www.fivemarigolds.com

Free Printable Star Wars Birthday Party Storm Trooper Favor Bags | www.fivemarigolds.com

To create the actual bag, I used inexpensive white paper bags from the grocery store. I searched for the keywords “storm trooper silhouette” and found an image I like. I downloaded this free Star Jedi font and added the words “You’re a trooper” to the 5.5″x10.5″ template I created in PhotoShop. Read to the end of this post for the free printable!

I printed the image directly on the bags. To do this, you need to go into your printer settings and create a custom paper size and paper texture. I used a small piece of painter tape to secure the base flap to the bag so it wouldn’t jam in the printer.  It took some trial and error before I felt like they were printing a clean image, without a lot of extra printer ink. I was going for inexpensive though, so despite a few rough printouts, these captured the look I was going for.

Here are the bag contents:

Star Wars Lego Birthday Favors | www.fivemarigolds.com

Knowing all the boys are really into Legos at this age, I really wanted to include some. I explored a lot of avenues, but almost everything was going to be a budget buster. I’ve heard of some creative moms creating their own little sets using the Pick a Brick section at the Lego store, but at $14.99/bucket, it was going to be a little more than I wanted to pay, and I wasn’t even sure if I could really build a believable spaceship.

I found my solution on ebay and Amazon: there are tons of people looking to unload Star Wars Advent Calendar kits or individual toys. I was able to score a lot of 11 for $1/each including shipping. Even better, each little kit came with building instructions – far better than what I would have been able to do myself using Pick a Brick. For those of you who have messaged me about being unable to find these deals on ebay, you can still find them here for less than $2 per favor!

I created my own hangtag using the same Star Wars font with a message from Yoda, “Do or do not, there is no try” along with a thank you message.

In addition to the goodie bags, we had a Jedi Training academy. We gave each little guest a Jedi vest made with an unused bed sheet we didn’t need and clothesline rope.

Star Wars Birthday Party Jedi Costumes | www.fivemarigolds.com

We also created the pool noodle lightsabers that are all the rage on Pinterest. We cut pool noodles in half using a serrated bread knife and decorated the ends with black and silver duct tape. Each little guest was given one to defeat some balloon storm troopers and then take home. These were the biggest hit of the party (literally, there was one bloody nose incident!).

No party is complete without a little craft, so we also had a Build A Droid work station that they seemed to enjoy. But not quite as much as the pool noodle light sabers, of course.
