How to Throw an Impromptu summer Party In Minutes

One of the things I love best about being able to work from home is the ability carve out little moments with the kids throughout the day in summer. Don’t get me wrong, working full-time and taking care of three kids during the summer months is a wild ride, but I truly wouldn’t have it any other way.

This month is finally feeling like summer here in the Midwest, which means living up all the summer goodness as much as we can! Since this is National Ice Cream month, we decided to combine three of our very favorite summer things: ice cream, butterflies, and impromptu parties.Butterfly Birthday Party Ice Cream Cake | Five Marigolds

If you’ve followed my blog for any amount of time you know I love a good excuse to throw a little party with the kids.  But, that doesn’t have to mean investing a lot of time or money.

Here are three tips for throwing a super easy and inexpensive “just because” summer party:

Keep it Simple. It’s important to know where to invest and where to leave it to the experts. I can make a boxed cake like nobody’s business, but it’s not necessarily going to look pretty. One of my favorite tips for taking a party up a notch is by adding a few custom details to your professional cake purchased from the grocery.

In this case, we were all about the ice cream, so we finally bought one of those fun Carvel® Ice Cream Cakes my kids are always asking me to get. We chose one topped with colorful ribbons of fresh whipped  frosting – the Carvel Lil’ Love Ice Cream Cake.

The ice cream cakes come in many different styles and sizes, including original Carvel®, Jon Donaire® and OREO®.Butterfly Birthday Party Ice Cream Cake | Five Marigolds

Since we’re celebrating summer mode, we decided to add our butterflies to the cake by just gently pressing them into the whipped topping. Doesn’t get any easier than that! Butterfly Birthday Party Ice Cream Cake | Five Marigolds

Boom. Custom cake.

Inside the cake are layers of vanilla and chocolate ice cream and chocolate crunchies. Mmmmm.Butterfly Birthday Party Ice Cream Cake | Five Marigolds

Use what you’ve got. The very best way to keep costs down when throwing a party is to invest in a few key pieces that you will use over and over. When we are ready to celebrate a birthday, the last day of school, or you know, National Ice Cream Month, we just pull these items out and we’re ready to party!

When my oldest daughter turned one, I purchased this vintage bunting that I hang year-round in her room, and also bring out for every celebration.Butterfly Birthday Party Ice Cream Cake | Five Marigolds

A few years ago, she was a butterfly fairy for Halloween, so we bought some very inexpensive butterfly decorations for the costume. Since then, we’ve used these to decorate for birthdays, Easter, and now, our summer celebration.Butterfly Birthday Party Ice Cream Cake | Five Marigolds

Enjoy the moment. Because I blog a lot about the parties I’ve thrown for the kids, people assume I go into full party mode for any gathering. That’s not true at all! I love throwing parties for the kids because I love watching them enjoy it together.

But, when it comes to parties I’m an attendee for, my primary goal is to keep it as easy as possible so I can enjoy the moment.Butterfly Birthday Party Ice Cream Cake | Five Marigolds

And in this case, enjoy a beautiful summer moment with my kids.Butterfly Birthday Party Ice Cream Cake | Five Marigolds

Thanks to my party stash, our Carvel Ice Cream Cake and a little creativity, that’s possible on a random Tuesday in July
