It may still be spring, but yesterday we turned up the heat with a summer themed party with our neighbors. One reason I especially love our neighborhood is because amid our connecting patchwork of suburban yards is where we all come together. When the weather is warm, our backyards are where we exchange friendly “hellos,” chat while the kids play together, share a drink – and a few laughs.
As we start the last week of the school year, I wanted to kick off the first unofficial week of summer. I wanted to create something really special and fun, on a small budget.
To pull off the full summer theme I decided to pull out all the stops – pineapple, watermelon, bright florals, and sparklers.
First, I had to create a fun tablescape. I hit up the Target dollar spot and found some colorful tablecloths that were begging for an upgrade. I hit up my local fabric store armed with a 1/2 off coupon and walked out with a great tassel embellishment.
Always one to do things the simple way, I used fabric glue…
…to create this awesomeness.
Because I only have one patio table, we pulled this old beat-up dresser out of storage.
We dined on Hawaiian kebobs – seasoned chicken with pineapple, peppers and onions.
Also on the menu was Pesto Pasta Salad, fruit, mango red onion salsa, and Coca-Cola™. Sometimes it’s the little things, like kicking back, watching the sun set, and sharing an ice cold Coke.
I was excited to see that Share a Coke is back this summer with 1,000 new names – including both first and last names.
As someone whose name has never appeared on the little license plates in souvenir shops, I love the idea of picking up a huge selection of these bottles and asking your guests to go by that name for the rest of the barbecue. The more exotic, the better!
Well, hello Jessica.
Since there is still a bite in the evening air in these parts, I bundled up some old quilts and afghans to get cozy as the evening went on.
I made these simple and inexpensive favors, because it’s not really summer without sparklers, is it?
Creating a festive themed barbecue doesn’t have to be expensive. I created this table centerpiece using watermelon and pineapples.
I bought some colorful paper plates and napkins from Target, and added them to wicker chargers I already had. Then, I topped them with some simple favors.
I hope I’ve inspired you that you don’t have to spend a lot to create a special and fun backyard party. If you’re ready to host your own, I’d love to help you get started by offering my favor tags as an exclusive printable for my readers.
