Tips for Decorating your Mantle
It’s feeling more like fall outside, and I’m loving my latest mantle decor. I’ve struggled with what to do above my fireplace and have discovered the following tips to make my changing decor look good, every time:
- Varying Heights – Think of it like a triangle or inverted triangle and balance your decor so that you have varying heights.
- Focal Point – When your room or mantle lacks a focal point, it can be displeasing to the eye, and it may not be obvious why. However, when you add a focal point for the eye to gravitate to, it becomes much more attractive and feels more balanced. You can create a focal point with one or more items. In this case, the mirror creates a large neutral backdrop and the circular tray takes the focal point slightly off-center, while still managing to look balanced.
- Layer – Add interest by adding layers of color and texture. As I mentioned above, the mirror adds dimension gives shape, but the plants, vases, tray and monogram add layers of interest across the mantle.
- Filler – Some people opt out of filler for a more clean look, but adding the little extras like a small aloe plant in a clean square bowl and a flat twig wreath in the background really finish the look to me.
What a beautiful mantel! I love that ampersand tray and the touch of green the aloe plant brings in. My mantel is in serious need of a redo right now, you’ve inspired me to finally do it!
Thanks so much for the sweet feedback, Emily!
