Adult Patriotic Popsicles
Happy Independence Day weekend!
Today I’m sharing a cool and festive adult treat for patriotic entertaining: Red, “Wine” and “Blue Popsicles.
I recently shared my love for French wines and cheeses, so I was thrilled when I was sent more happy mail in the form of more French wines, cheeses and salts – just in time for our Independence Day neighborhood bash (red, white and Bleu Cheese hamburgers, anyone?)!
These wines are already festive in red, white, and blue ( theMarie de Beauregard Vouvray 2015 has a bluish tint!) but these popsicles are even cooler.
To make these red white and blue popsicles, you’re going to freeze three layers:
Fruit Layer 1
- 1/2 C Sugar
- 1/2 C Water
- 1 lb. strawberries
- Pinch of La Baleine Kosher Sea Salt
- 1 C. Wine – I used Georges Duboeuf Pouilly-Fuissé 2015
Cream Layer Layer 2
- 14 oz. Sweetened Condensed Milk
- 1 1/2 C. Half & Half
- 1 C. Heavy Cream
- 1 T. Almond Extract, if desired
- Pinch of Sea Salt
Fruit Layer Layer 3
- 1/2 C Sugar
- 1/2 C Water
- 1 lb. Blueberries
- Pinch of Sea Salt
- 1 C. Wine
For the fruit layers, I boil 1 C. of sugar and 1 C. of water on medium heat until the sugar dissolves. Then, blend in the fruit and a pinch of sea salt and freeze. Once solid, add the next layer, and the next.If desired, you can add the cream mixture into the fruit layer(s), instead.
If you’re wondering if wine freezes well, the answer is yes, most do (depending on alcohol content). Adding the fruit and sugar water helps it freeze even more solid. Be sure to make these at lease 5 hours before you plan serving them so they are frozen solid.
If you’re worried that making popsicles with wine is a waste of a perfectly good glass of vino – no worries. All of the items here may be imported from France, but the are all totally affordable for everyday use.
I hope you enjoy my recipe for red white and blue popsicles. Happy Independence Day, everyone!
